Whitney Chatterjee Joins Apollo as General Counsel

Whitney Chatterjee is set to join Apollo Global Management, a company listed on the New York Stock Exchange, as General Counsel starting April 3, 2023. In this position, she will oversee the legal matters related to Apollo's asset management and retirement services businesses.

On January 1, 2024, Chatterjee will assume the role of the Chief Legal Officer, succeeding John Suydam, who has held the position since joining the firm in 2006. Suydam will become a senior adviser and continue as a partner of Apollo.

Prior to joining Apollo, Suydam was a partner at O’Melveny & Myers where he was head of M&A and co-head of the firm’s corporate department.

Before joining Apollo Global Management, Chatterjee served as a partner at Sullivan & Cromwell, where she led the investment management practice and was a member of the financial services groups.

With a wealth of experience advising investment managers of public and private funds, Chatterjee has a deep understanding of key legislation such as the Investment Company Act, the Investment Advisers Act, and the Volcker Rule.

Chatterjee has provided guidance on a range of legal matters, including M&A transactions, and the offering and operation of registered and unregistered fund products.

In a statement, Apollo CEO Marc Rowan expressed his pleasure in welcoming Whitney Chatterjee to lead the firm's legal team. Rowan emphasised that as a highly integrated and multifaceted organisation, Apollo will benefit from Chatterjee's extensive experience in navigating a variety of legal, compliance, and governance matters across the globe.

“Particularly as we continue to strive for industry-leading corporate governance and corporate citizenship, Whitney will be instrumental in building and strengthening relationships across federal and state governments, fund management firms, insurers, international organizations and other key industry stakeholders,” Rowan said.

Apollo CEO Marc Rowan expressed his gratitude to John Suydam on behalf of the entire organisation for his two decades of leadership, during which he played a key role in growing Apollo into one of the world's largest publicly traded asset managers.

Rowan added that Apollo will continue to benefit from Suydam's insights and experience as a senior adviser and partner after the transition period when Whitney Chatterjee assumes responsibility for all day-to-day legal efforts across the firm.
