SSAB Appoints New General Counsel to Fill Void Left by Departing Legal Head
SSAB, the Swedish steel company, has named Lars Sjöbring as its new Head of Legal Affairs and General Counsel, succeeding Jonas Bergstrand, who announced his departure in January.
With over 25 years of combined in-house and private practice experience, Sjöbring most recently served as the Chief Legal Officer at EF Education First. In his new role at SSAB, he will be responsible for managing the company's legal affairs on a global scale. Sjöbring was scheduled to commence his position on May 15 and will be located at the company's headquarters in Stockholm.
Martin Lindqvist, the President and CEO of SSAB, expressed his confidence in Lars Sjöbring, stating that Sjöbring possesses broad legal expertise gained from working in Europe and the USA. Lindqvist is convinced that Sjöbring will make a valuable contribution to SSAB's vision of becoming a leading and environmentally sustainable company, free from fossil fuels.
Before joining EF Education First, Lars Sjöbring held prominent legal positions in various organisations. He served as the General Counsel and Executive Vice President of Legal Affairs at the automotive technology company Veoneer for nearly four years. Before that, he held the role of General Counsel and Group Vice President of Legal Affairs at Autoliv in Detroit. Interestingly, Sjöbring had previously worked for Autoliv for over six years in their Stockholm office before Veoneer spun out from Autoliv in 2018.
Additionally, Sjöbring accumulated experience at the offshore drilling company Transocean in Geneva, where he spent close to two years. He also had notable roles at Nokia as Director for M&A Legal and at Telia as Corporate Counsel. Furthermore, Sjöbring gained valuable insights during his tenure at Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom, a renowned law firm in New York, where he practiced for nearly three years.
After a remarkable tenure of 17 years at SSAB, Jonas Bergstrand has decided to step down from his position. He is set to assume the role of General Counsel at Volvo Construction Equipment starting this summer. Martin Lindqvist, expressing his appreciation, acknowledged Bergstrand's significant contribution to SSAB's growth and transformation into a leading force in the steel industry's shift toward sustainability.
