Madhabi Puri Buch appointed SEBI's chairperson

The first for a woman and a person from the private sector to enter the male-dominated field of financial regulation

The government has appointed Madhabi Puri Buch as the new chairperson of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet had cleared her name recently.

Buch succeeds Ajay Tyagi whose tenure as chairperson ended on February 28. Having earlier served as a whole-time member of SEBI, she has been appointed for a period of three years.

The former banker has earlier served as a consultant to the New Development Bank in Shanghai, China, and also as the head of the Singapore office of the private equity firm Greater Pacific Capital.

Buch was also the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer at ICICI Securities Limited and an Executive Director on the Board of ICICI Bank.

She holds an MBA degree from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, and graduated in Mathematics from St. Stephen's College, New Delhi.
