DLA Piper bolsters Project and Energy practice in New York by as Oliver Wright joins as a Partner
Multinational law firm DLA Piper has announced the appointment of Oliver Wright as a partner in the firm's project and energy team within the finance group in its New York office.
Wright, an acknowledged global leader in the energy and mining sector, was previously associated with White & Case as a mining and mineral partner for close to four years.
In addition to private practice, Wright spent many years as in-house counsel at Mubadala, where he gained extensive experience advising on a broad range of transactions across the mining & metals sector, regularly taking the lead on project development, financing and M&A transactions.
His areas of expertise include representing clients in various sectors such as deal structuring, investment risks, joint venture management, offtake arrangements and other operational matters, new country entry, and relations with host country governments.
Wright also advises sponsors, lenders, and private equity and private credit clients on transactions spanning several jurisdictions and combines aspects of project finance and M&A in renewable energy and the mining of minerals for the energy transition.
"With his diverse experience advising on a broad range of transactions across the mining and metals sector, Oliver will expand our transactional vertical strength in the energy and natural resources sector, add to our team of lawyers active in the US and Middle East strategic initiative and add a recognized energy and natural resources practice," Matt Schwartz, chair of the US finance practice, said.
"We are excited to welcome Oliver to the New York office and believe that DLA Piper will provide Oliver with the best platform to pursue opportunities that will further supplant his reputation as a global leader in the energy and mining sector," said Cara Edwards, managing partner of the New York office.
Before joining White & Case, Wright worked as general counsel with Yahsat for 16 months in 2017-2018, and as a senior legal counsel with Mubadala for eight years between January 2011 and December 2018.
He also spent over three years as an associate with Herbert Smith Freehills in the firm's Dubai office from 2007-2010 and as a lawyer with Minter Ellison in Brisbane between February 2005 and November 2007.
A truly global lawyer, Wright's prominent experience includes the representation of an industrial minerals and technology company on the project financing and development of a graphite anode processing facility in Louisiana; the representation of the underwriters in connection with multiple offerings of American Depositary Shares of a lithium mining company; and the representation of a major US-based global investment management corporation in its debt investment in a portfolio of certain mining assets in the US, Brazil, Finland, Canada, and Peru.
