Charles-Albert Helleputte Joins King & Spalding as Partner in Data, Privacy and Security Practice in Brussels

King & Spalding has announced that Charles-Albert (Charly) Helleputte has joined the firm’s Data, Privacy and Security team and its Government Matters and Regulation practice group as a partner in the Brussels office.

Helleputte’s practice spans a broad spectrum of EU regulatory matters involving data privacy, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI), and other digital technologies. He provides practical and pragmatic advice to clients facing increased accountability requirements, particularly in the AI space. His work also includes advising on the broader use of standards and certification mechanisms across the data life cycle in both regulated and non-regulated industries. He has experience advising on GDPR, NIS1 and NIS2 Directives, the EU AI Act, and eIDAS, among other frameworks, and has represented clients before national and EU supervisory authorities and courts, including the European Data Protection Board (formerly Working Party No. 29).

“Charly’s abilities to pragmatically address EU-wide data and digital matters provide additional strength to our international data, privacy and security offering and further solidifies our capabilities for managing cross-border privacy and cybersecurity incidents involving multiple regulatory and enforcement landscapes,” said Phyllis Sumner, leader of King & Spalding’s Data, Privacy and Security team. “Charly’s experience advising clients on AI-driven transactions and data privacy issues aligns well with our firm’s growing focus on technology and innovation, and his ability to navigate evolving regulatory frameworks around AI, coupled with his forward-looking approach, will strengthen and expand our technology-related practice areas.”

Helleputte joins from Squire Patton Boggs, where he was a partner, head of the EU practice, and co-chair of the global Data Privacy, Cybersecurity and Digital Assets team. He holds an M.A., cum laude, from Solvay Business School, a J.D., Licence en Droit, cum laude, from Université catholique de Louvain (Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium), and a B.A. in Law from Université Saint Louis (Brussels).

“King & Spalding has an impressive reputation, growing data privacy and technology practices, and a strong platform on which I will be able to expand how I help clients navigate the rapidly evolving developments in this area,” said Helleputte. “I am looking forward to collaborating with my new partners across practices and borders to contribute to the continuing expansion of the firm’s data, privacy and security work.”

Helleputte is the third partner to join King & Spalding’s Brussels office in 2025, following the arrivals of Arnoud Willems and Bregt Natens, both international trade partners, in February.
