Tripura will soon have a National Law University (NLU) and a bill for its establishment would be placed before the state Legislative Assembly in the budget session.
Subject to the passing of the bill, the university will be the 24th NLU in the country.
The state Law Minister Ratan Lal Nath met the officials to push the plan. A committee comprising the state government representatives, judges of the Tripura High Court and legal experts would be constituted to suggest the process for appointment of the chancellor, the vice-chancellor and faculty members. The panel would also finalize the courses to be offered.
Prof VC Vivekanandan, The Vice-Chancellor of the Hidayatullah National Law University and Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) convener for 2022, said, "The university will provide an opportunity to the aspirants from the North-Eastern states and will also contribute to the national talent pool of the legal profession."
The university is expected to initially run from the Tripura Judicial Academy building and later shift to a new building. The admission would be through the CLAT.
