The penalty on TDI Infrastructure is Rs.95 crores
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has slapped a penalty of Rs.115 crore on the TDI Group and other builders of Kundli, Sonipat district in Haryana for violation of the Environment Protection Act by discharging untreated sewage directly into a river.
The NGT bench comprising Justice Adarsh Kumar Goyal disposed of a complaint moved by the Kisan Uday Samiti, a registered body of the villagers from Nagal Kalan and adjoining villages where the builders have developed residential and commercial projects.
The complaint was filed in 2018 when the office bearers of the Samiti apprised the tribunal about the problems faced by them due to the discharge of untreated sewage waste by the occupants and inhabitants of the colonies.
The complaint exposed the nexus between HSIIDC, HSPCB, and HSVP and the local district administration who protected the builders. The Samiti had also mentioned the representations made to the Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar's redressal mechanism level. But it went unheard.
The private developers included in the complaint were TDI Infrastructure Ltd, Ansal API, and Parkar Residency. They have constructed several residential group housing complexes in the area, wherein approximately 14,000 to 15,000 people reside.
According to the judgment, while a fine of over Rs.95 crore has been slapped on TDI and its group of companies, the rest of the builders were penalized between Rs.1 crore and Rs.10 crores for violations.
