Former Supreme Court Judge Manoj Kumar Mukherjee Passes Away

Former Judge of the Supreme Court (SC) Justice Manoj Kumar Mukherjee (MK Mukherjee) due to his illness passed away at Calcutta, at the age of 87. He had also served as the Chief Justice in both Allahabad High Court and Bombay High Court.

Justice Mukherjee was born in 1933 and he was enrolled as an advocate in 1962 and also joined the Asansol Bar in November 1956. Till 1971 he practiced in the Sub-Divisional and District Court and Labour Tribunal and his areas of expertise include criminal law and Industrial Labour matters.

On 17 June 1977, he was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Calcutta and on 8 December 1977, he was made a permanent Judge of the High Court. On 14 December 1993, he was elevated to the Bench of the Supreme Court and got retired on 11 November 1998.

After he retired from the Apex Court, he was appointed by the Union Govt. as the Chairperson of the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Disappearance Commission for Enquiry in May 1999.

The Commission headed by him concluded that Bose did not die in a plane crash and that the ashes in Renkoji temple, Japan are not those of Bose. However, the Commission's Report 2005 was rejected by the Government.
