EU issues legal action against UK in connection with Northern Ireland Protocol Bill

The four new infringement procedures launched by the European Union against UK for non-compliance with significant rules relating to trading arrangements for Northern Ireland come in addition to the infringement procedures which were launched on 15 June by the EU.

The EU governing press statement explained that "the UK's unwillingness to engage in meaningful discussion since last Friday and the continued passage of the Northern Ireland Protocol Bill through the UK Parliament go directly against the spirit of Constrictive Co-operation."

The infringement relates to failure to collect and provide the EU with data regarding exports from Northern Ireland to Great Britain, and to implement rules agreed on EU excise duties, Value added Tax and alcohol excise duties.

The UK has two months to respond to a request sent by the commission to the UK to comply with the protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland, after which the commission may take appropriate measures.
