Sony Music Ends Dispute With Marriott Over Hit Songs By Beyonce And Michael Jackson

Sony Music Entertainment has informed the US District Court for the District of Delaware that it intends to dismiss a lawsuit accusing hotel chain Marriott International Inc of misusing hundreds of its songs in ads on social media platforms.

In 2020, Sony had warned Marriott that social media posts on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and TikTok were using its music without permission. It accused Marriott and its influencer partners of misusing 931 Sony Music songs including hits by Beyonce, Michael Jackson and Harry Styles.

Sony demanded that the court allow it monetary damages and an order blocking Marriott from using its music.

If the case had not been settled mutually, Marriott would be liable for over $139 million in statutory infringement damages, under the copyright law.

Sandra Crawshaw-Sparks and David Munkittrick of Proskauer Rose appeared for Sony Music.
