Maxeon Solar Sues Canadian Solar for Alleged TOPCon Solar Cell Technology Patent Infringement
Singapore-based Maxeon Solar Technologies, Ltd., a leading innovator in solar cell technology, has announced that it has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Canadian Solar Inc. in the Eastern District of Texas. The lawsuit accuses Canadian Solar of infringing on Maxeon's patents related to TOPCon (Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact) solar cell technology.
Maxeon highlighted its extensive intellectual property portfolio, incorporating over 1,650 granted patents and 330 pending patent applications, which safeguard the innovations behind their IBC, Shingled Hypercell, and TOPCon technologies.
"Maxeon has a rich history in developing solar cell technology, pioneering the development and commercialization of tunnel oxide passivated contacts," stated Marc Robinson, Associate General Counsel at Maxeon. He further highlighted that Maxeon's research and development efforts in TOPCon technology predate the industry-wide adoption of the term itself. "Our team has developed numerous methods for integrating TOPCon technology into both back-contact and front-contact solar cells," Robinson added.
This is not Maxeon's first intellectual property lawsuit. In November, they filed a similar lawsuit against Aiko Solar and its partners in a German court, alleging infringement of the design patent for their All-Back Contact solar cells.
