Holland & Knight acquires Waller Lansden to strengthen its southern US presence

The primary reason for Holland & Knight's merger is Waller Lansden Dortch & Davis's reputation and experience in the healthcare industry

Holland & Knight, an American multinational law firm, announced that it will be merging with Waller Lansden Dortch & Davis, a Nashville-based law firm. This move will strengthen Holland & Knight's presence in the southern United States.

The merger is expected to be completed in the first quarter of the year. As a result, the combined firm will have 2,000 lawyers in 35 offices worldwide. Holland & Knight, which is based in Florida and is one of the 30 largest law firms in the United States, will gain 280 lawyers from Waller Lansden Dortch & Davis across Tennessee, Alabama, and Texas.

Holland & Knight's Managing Partner, Steven Sonberg, has stated that the main reason for the merger is Waller Lansden Dortch & Davis' reputation and experience in the healthcare industry. The firm sees this as a strategic opportunity to expand its healthcare practice and enhance its service offerings to clients.

This merger is the latest in a series of major expansions for Holland & Knight. In 2021, the firm combined with Dallas-based Thompson & Knight, a large law firm with around 300 attorneys in Texas, which has become a key legal market in the United States in recent years.

The merger with Waller Lansden Dortch & Davis will give Holland & Knight a significant presence in Nashville, as the firm's headquarters in the city has more than 235 lawyers.

Nashville is a major hub for the healthcare industry, and Waller Lansden's clients include pharmaceutical companies Merck & Co Inc and Bayer AG, as well as residential care company Acadia Healthcare Co. Inc.
