DLA Piper has announced the hiring of Tony Rutherford as a Partner in the Finance, Projects & Restructuring Practice in Melbourne.

On his appointment, Amber Matthews, the Australia Managing Partner at DLA Piper commented, “Rutherford’s deep sector experience and global insight will be invaluable to the firm. There’s a strong alignment with his experience and DLA Piper’s strategy, which includes a focus on the construction, infrastructure and transport sector, as well as renewable energy and energy transition-related work.”

She added, “Rutherford’s appointment provides an opportunity for the firm to bolster its front-end projects and construction capabilities across Australia. His deep expertise in social infrastructure is particularly relevant given the state and federal government’s multi-billion dollar commitment to improving housing, health care and education facilities and access. This level of investment will also require private capital for investment from super funds and private equity houses, and with Rutherford on board, we will be well-placed to support a wide range of industry participants.”

Matthews further stated, “It’s a testament to the firm that we have such high calibre candidates returning to us. It demonstrates our positive culture and the vitality of a global firm.”

Acknowledging that he was delighted to be back on board, Rutherford said, “I’m looking forward to re-joining DLA Piper as a partner. They are committed to the construction and infrastructure sector, particularly in the ESG space, and I know first-hand of their dynamic culture and forward-thinking approach to client relationships.”

Rutherford was previously a construction, infrastructure and projects partner at Holding Redlich. He advised on large and complex infrastructure transactions across a wide range of sectors. Prior to that, from 2008-2013, he served as a senior associate at DLA Piper’s Dubai, Perth and Melbourne offices.
