Allen & Overy Bolsters Structured Finance Practice with John Goldfinch, Ahead of A&O Shearman Merger

Allen & Overy (A&O) has announced the appointment of John Goldfinch as a partner in its global structured finance practice, bolstering its capabilities ahead of the upcoming merger with Shearman & Sterling to form A&O Shearman.

Goldfinch, a renowned European structured finance advisor specialising in the CLO market, joins A&O from Milbank. His arrival reflects the firm's strategic focus on expanding its private capital practice, which has seen client revenue soar by over 60 per cent globally in the past two years.

Goldfinch joins forces with senior associates Adrian Kwok and Peter West, Eleanor Cripps and Alexandra Wells. Together, they will seamlessly integrate with A&O's multidisciplinary private capital group, collaborating with teams across capital markets, private equity, leveraged finance, high yield, funds & asset management, and ABS to deliver comprehensive client solutions.

David Lucking, Global Head of International Capital Markets at A&O, commented, "John's arrival will further strengthen our bench working with private capital sponsor clients accessing the structured capital markets. We look forward to welcoming him to the team.”

This strategic hire follows a series of lateral additions across A&O's funds, private equity, and distressed debt practices in the Middle East, Singapore, London, and New York. These moves, coupled with Goldfinch's appointment, strengthen A&O's position as a global leader in private capital across diverse investment strategies.

Goldfinch's arrival further bolsters A&O's transatlantic CLO practice as the firm prepares for its historic merger with Shearman & Sterling. Approved by both partnerships in October 2023, the combined entity, A&O Shearman, will be the first fully integrated global elite law firm, boasting nearly 4,000 lawyers across 49 offices and generating over $3.5 billion in combined revenue.
