Baker McKenzie strengthens antitrust practice in Germany with a new addition

Baker McKenzie is further expanding its antitrust practice with the addition of Dr. Andrés Martin-Ehlers.

With a proven antitrust and state aid lawyer as part of its team, the firm says that its practice is optimally positioned now for the upcoming challenges, in particular, due to the incoming EU Foreign Subsidies Regulation.

Andrés Martin-Ehlers, a German-Spanish lawyer, will join Baker McKenzie's antitrust team at the Düsseldorf and Frankfurt offices as Counsel on February 1, 2023.

Before establishing his own practice, Andrés Martin-Ehlers was a partner in the Frankfurt office of Oppenhoff & Partner and Orrick for 10 years each and headed the antitrust and state aid departments in both firms.

"With Andrés Martin-Ehlers, we can strategically complement our international teams in the field of antitrust and state aid law in an excellent way. The EU Foreign Subsidies Regulation, which has now come into force, presents our clients with new challenges – many transactions will be subject to further approval requirements. Here we can score with Andrés Martin-Ehlers, who has also worked in Brussels in the past. We warmly welcome him to our team," Dr. Nicolas Kredel, head of Baker McKenzie's German and EMEA-wide antitrust group, said.

A highly experienced lawyer, Andrés Martin-Ehlers advises a broad range of clients on all aspects involving antitrust issues. He has a particular focus on state aid law issues and regularly conducts state aid law proceedings before the German and European courts. His focus is on advising companies in the aviation sector, chemicals, manufacturing, and sports.

"Baker McKenzie's strong international and national network provides an excellent platform especially for state aid law advice, particularly in a cross-border context - also with the strong connection between the German offices and Brussels. I am very much looking forward to working with my new colleagues in the Baker McKenzie team," commented Dr. Andrés Martin-Ehlers on his move.

Baker McKenzie most recently elected Dr. Anika Schürmann as a partner in the antitrust practice in July 2021. The German antitrust practice since then witnessed a strong growth trajectory.
