Prof Ranbir Singh joins IILM Law School as pro-Chancellor

With its first academic session commencing in 2019, IILM Law School has been located in Haryana's Gurugram city.

Previously the Vice-Chancellor of National Law University, Delhi and NALSAR Hyderabad, Prof Ranbir Singh has joined IILM Law School in Gurugram, Haryana as Pro-Chancellor.

Professor Singh is an administrator and academician with over four decades of experience. In 1978, he held a faculty position at Kurukshetra University after completing his Ph.D. He moved to Maharshi Dayanand University in Rohtak, from there, where he served in several capacities, including Professor, Head Dean and Proctor, until 1996. During the academic year 1996-97, he taught law at the National Law School of India University in Bangalore.

A founding vice-chancellor at NALSAR Hyderabad, he was instrumental at its establishment in 1998. During his tenure there, he taught law for ten years, before he became the inaugural Vice-Chancellor of National Law University, Delhi in 2008. After twelve years at NLU Delhi, Prof. Singh's contract ended in September 2020. He was succeeded by Prof. Srikrishna Deva Rao.

As a member of the Bar Council of India's Legal Education Committee, Prof Singh served in that capacity. Under his leadership, a Committee was formed to prepare a draft bill for the abolition of child labour with the assistance of the International Labour Organization (ILO). Having served on an advisory committee formed by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India to recommend draft legislation for DNA profiling, he has expertise in the draft legislation. In addition to that, he served on the Ministry of Home Affairs' Soli Sorabjee Committee, which drafted the New Police Act.

Furthermore, he has served as a member of the National Committee in charge of administering the Rajiv Gandhi Advocates Training Scheme launched by the Ministry of Law and Justice in 2011. In the 19th Law Commission of India, he was a member (part-time).

The inaugural academic session of the IILM Law School began in 2019, under the guidance of Chancellor Dr SY Qureshi (former Chief Election Commissioner), Vice Chancellor Dr Sujata Shahi and Dean Dr Asha Verma.
