Ananta Barua joins IndusLaw as Senior Advisor

He was previously the Executive Director of SEBI for over eight years

Ananta Barua, the ex-Whole-Time-Member of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), has joined IndusLaw as a Senior Advisor.

Barua retired as a Whole Time Member on 31 July 2023. He oversaw the departments of market intermediaries and regulation, enforcement, legal affairs, mutual funds, and market regulations.

Welcoming Barua to the firm, Gaurav Dani and Suneeth Katarki, the founding partners at IndusLaw expressed, “We are very excited to have Ananta Barua on board. His vast experience and knowledge will further enhance our regulatory practice and help us provide support to our clients on complex regulatory matters.”

Barua remarked, "I’m happy to be part of IndusLaw and look forward to working with the firm.”

He was previously the Executive Director of SEBI for over eight years. He headed and was responsible for regulation and supervision of the investment management department (comprising mutual funds, AlF, PMS), the department of debt & hybrid securities (corporate bonds, RIET, InvIT), and foreign portfolio investors.

Barua was instrumental in laying the regulatory framework for AIF, Riet, InvIT, bonds (corporate, municipal, green), securitized debt, foreign portfolio investors, research analysts, and investment advisors.

As a SEBI board member, he dealt with policy proposals and approval of the regulations and acted as a quasi-judicial and settlement authority.
