Herbert Smith Freehills Appoints Jojo Fan As Managing Partner For China

Herbert Smith Freehills, a leading international law firm, has announced the appointment of Jojo Fan as Managing Partner, China, for a three-year term.

A native of Hong Kong and a commercial litigation partner since 2020, Jojo Fan will work closely with Nanda Lau, the head of the firm’s Beijing and Shanghai offices. She succeeds Partner Matt Emsley, who will continue to focus on his successful Hong Kong capital markets practice.

A partner since 2020, Jojo Fan has a broad commercial litigation practice and extensive experience advising clients on cross-border China-related disputes. She specializes in contentious banking litigation and advises clients on boardroom, shareholder, and joint venture disputes.

Fluent in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin, Jojo graduated from the University of Hong Kong with bachelor's degrees in law and social sciences (government and laws). She is qualified in both Hong Kong and England & Wales.

"Under Jojo's leadership, the team will continue to support our domestic and international clients' ambitions in China, particularly through outbound investment to Southeast Asia and the Middle East, and in energy transition, private capital and tech," said Graeme Preston, Asia Managing Partner.

Preston added, "We remain committed to our teams in Beijing, Hong Kong, and Shanghai, our joint operation partnership with Kewei Law Firm, and the opportunities that the China region offers to both our firm and its clients."

Expressing gratitude for the outgoing Managing Partner, Preston said, "I'd also like to thank Matt for his calm and decisive leadership of the China team and strong client focus during such challenging times."
