Former Supreme Court of India Judge – Justice AR Lakshmanan passed away early this morning in Tiruchirappalli aged 78. Reportedly, sudden cardiac arrest was the cause of his demise.
He was enrolled as an Advocate on January 10, 1968 at Madras. He practiced in Civil Writs and Criminal matter both on Original and Appellate sides of the High Court. He also worked as Government Pleader of Tamil Nadu in the Madras High Court, and as Legal Adviser and standing counsel to several Banks and various other institutions. Nominated by the Government of Tamil Nadu as a Senior Advocate to impart training to selected Law Graduates belonging to the Backward Classes.
Justice Lakshmanan was appointed as a permanent Judge of the Madras High Court on June 14, 1990. He was transferred to the Kerala High Court on December 4, 1997. He was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court on May 29, 2000. Later, he was transferred as Chief Justice to the Andhra Pradesh High Court on November 26, 2001.
Justice Lakshmanan was appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court in the year 2002 and he retired in 2007. He was part of the Bench that banned smoking in public places. Subsequently, he held the post of Chairman of the Law Commission and submitted 32 reports to the government on judicial reforms.
