US International Trade Commission Accuses Lenovo Of Infringing Ericsson 5G Patents
It could lead to a ban on its US imports
The United States International Trade Commission (FTC) has ruled that smartphones made by China-based Lenovo's Motorola Mobility infringe patents owned by Sweden-based Ericsson.
In an initial ruling, the ITC judge held that the smartphones violated Ericsson's patent rights in 5G wireless technology, handing Ericsson a preliminary victory in its international patent licensing dispute with Lenovo.
The Commission will rule on Ericsson's allegations in April. Earlier, in a related matter, another ITC judge had ruled in favor of Lenovo.
In 2023, Ericsson filed its complaint with the Washington-based ITC. It alleged that phones from Motorola's Moto G, Edge and Razr lines infringed patents of wireless communications.
The allegations were denied by Lenovo.
The companies are also embroiled in patent lawsuits in South America, the UK and North Carolina.
In its infringement cases, Ericsson had won preliminary court orders banning sales of Lenovo smartphones in Brazil and Colombia.
Recently, the US Courts of Appeals revived Lenovo's request for an injunction to bar enforcement of the South American bans.
