The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to take effective steps to prevent wastage of water in the country’s capital in the wake of several housing societies misusing the Aam Aadmi Party’s scheme of providing 20,000 litres of water each month free of cost.
The bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel noted that after availing the required quantity of 20,000 liters free of cost, these societies start extracting groundwater by using borewells to avoid water tariffs.
The NGT held that “The free water policy of providing 20,000 litres of water free per month also results in excessive use of water. DJB needs to ensure that treated waste water is mandatorily utilised as its release without any use is a colossal waste of public exchequer”.
The DGT has been directed by the NGT to prepare an action plan in consultation with local bodies or any other expert to ensure that rain water harvesting systems are installed in all government buildings.
