Noted jurist and former Attorney General Soli Sorabjee dies after infecting Covid-19

It turned out to be a Black Friday for the Indian judiciary with noted jurist Soli Jehangir Sorabjee breathing his last in a South Delhi hospital on Friday morning.

Sorabjee, 91, had served as India's Attorney General twice and was rated amongst legal luminaries and a living legend.

Sorabjee was admitted to a private South Delhi hospital after getting infected with COVID-19. His end came on Friday morning.

Born in 1930 in western Indian metropolis Bombay, Sorabjee began his legal career at the age of 23 when he started practice at the Bombay High Court in 1953. He was designated as a Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court of India in 1971.

Sorabjee served as the Attorney General of India twice, first from 1989-90 and then from 1998-2004. He was bestowed with the highest Indian civilian award Padma Vibhushan in March 2002 in recognition of his defence of freedom of speech and the protection of human rights.

Sorabjee was appointed by the UN as a Special Rapporteur for Nigeria, in 1997, to report on the human rights situation in that country. Following this, he became a member and later Chair of the UN-Sub Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights, from 1998 to 2004.

He was also a member of the United Nations Sub-commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities since 1998 and served as a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration at The Hague from 2000 to 2006.

Sorabjee shot to fame during the infamous Emergency years as he defended the freedom of speech and expression and worked towards revocation of censorship orders and bans on publications.
