Jones Day: 48 lawyers to partner in another successive bumper round

Updated batch of promotions after 50 people have promoted last December

Among the top 10 US legal firms, Jones Day has promoted 48 of its lawyers to partners, its second successive bumper round after it promoted 50 in December, upgrading 34 in 2019.

Around 11 promotions occurred in Europe and just one in Asia-Pacific, with the remaining promotions conducted across the firm's extensive network of US offices.

There were five promotions in Washington DC, followed by four each in Chicago and London. The promotions spread throughout the firm's 41 global offices as they did in 2020 - partners were made in 22 global offices. Among those offices to welcome three new partners are Pittsburgh, New York, Dallas and the firm's headquarters in Cleveland.

This round's gender split is slightly less even than 2020 when 24 of the cohort were women or 48 percent; this time, 21 of the participants were women or 44 percent.

In its 11 Asian-Pacific locations, the firm has elevated only global disputes specialist Katie Mead in Perth – in 2020, the firm has promoted six lawyers across the region. Additionally, the firm did not promote any of its lawyers in its Middle East or Latin American offices.

In Europe, however, promotion numbers nearly doubled like 11 to last year's number of six despite Asia being down. Among the four new hires in London, where there has been a war for talent in the booming areas of M&A and private equity, funds specialist, Hannah Rose, who joined the firm in 2010, as a trainee is among a host of talented recruits, including Philip Devenish (disputes), Ryan Hill (real estate) and Matt Trafford (property finance).

The firm's Paris offices have promoted private equity specialist, Alexandre Wibaux and disputes lawyer CyrilPhilibert. Alexandre Wibaux joined in 2014 from a leading French independent, De Pardieu Brocas Maffei, while Cyril Philibert joined the firm in 2007.

Furthermore, two promotions occurred in Germany's private equity and media hub Munich - which has been the scene of several high profile lateral hires between international firms so far this year - with M&A lawyer Markus Ledwina and IP specialist Dr. Ping Li getting promotions. Madrid and Milan both bagged promotions, completing the European contingent.

In 2021, the US giant has made numerous lateral hires across its international network. A quartet of real estate lawyers joined from DLA Piper in Milan in September and a dispute team of five from Quinn Emanuel in Perth, Australia, including partner Michael Lundberg, joined in the spring.

At the end of a year with booming deal markets fueled by an M&A bonanza in the United States, Jones Day is the latest law firm to announce record or near-record promotions. Weil, Sidley and Simpson Thacher are among them. In an effort to retain and reward its best talent, Kirkland recently shortened the time it takes to achieve equity partner status by one year.
