Virtual law firm Scale LLP Acquires IP Firm Creedon
Scale LLP, the Silicon Valley-based distributed law firm, announced that it has acquired leading Texas IP boutique Creedon PLLC as part of its ongoing national expansion through strategic partnerships.
Founded in Silicon Valley in 2020, Scale has emerged as one of the leading virtual law firms, leveraging cutting-edge technology to operate without physical offices. The firm’s innovative approach allows lawyers to work entirely remotely, attracting legal professionals seeking an alternative to the traditional billable-hour requirement and a greater share of fees collected from clients.
David Reidy, Managing Partner of Scale, said the firm is seeing an uptick in interest by small ‘boutique’ law firms looking to join Scale.
James Creedon, whose firm received the Reisman Award in the Community Champion category, will join Scale LLP as its new Deputy Managing Partner, Impact Initiatives.
Creedon PLLC is the first Certified B Corp law firm in Texas, and through the firm’s award-winning One Future Initiative has been recognized for donating resources, revenue, hours, and service to the community.
Founded in 2017 by Managing Partner James Creedon, the firm is an award-winning IP boutique dedicated to the power of ideas. Creedon’s commitment to ideas led to a practice protecting the creative work of hundreds of artists and other clients.
Managing Partner David Reidy said, “James has a long history of military and community service, and we are thrilled and proud to welcome him and the Creedon team to Scale. In addition to a top-tier IP practice, James and his team are dedicated to the shared goal of creating a better world. His record of service makes him the perfect partner to lead Scale’s Impact Initiatives. As a firm, we are dedicated to serving our clients and our community, and we have found a true leader in James Creedon.”
Creedon team members Shannon Straughan and Charles Wallace will also join Scale.
A competitive powerlifter and bodybuilder with a fierce passion for health and fitness, Straughan represents social media influencers, manages contractual and sponsorship engagement, and has provided insight and guidance to fitness and creative brands regarding IP strategy, product labelling, and other compliance issues.
Wallace assists artistic clients and build their brands, create new works, and protect their IP. Wallace has experience in nearly every aspect of theatrical, music, and film production, and continues to look for new ways he can serve his community of fellow artists.
Scale Founding Partner Adam Forest, who leads the firm’s strategic partnership initiative, sees an uptick of high-quality boutique teams with interest in merger talks.
He commented, “Boutique law firm founders have historically had few exit options, and when they do, garnered little compared to similar businesses in other industries. The rise of distributed law firms, however, is increasing demand for local practices and therefore may finally change that equation.”
The boutique merger is just the beginning of what Scale sees as a wave of opportunity to expand, leveraging technology and the new post-pandemic shift to a less localized practice of law.
