Global law firms Ashurst and Dentons have played pivotal roles in achieving financial close for the Al Ajban Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Independent Power Project in Abu Dhabi.
Ashurst provided advisory services to Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) on the structuring, procurement, and financing of the solar plant. Meanwhile, Dentons represented International Sponsors EDF Renewables (EDFR) and Korea Western Power Company throughout the bidding and financing stages, including the review of finance documents.
Located in the Al Ajban area, the plant is designed to generate 1.5 gigawatts (AC) of power. Once operational, it will supply electricity to approximately 160,000 homes across the UAE and is expected to significantly reduce CO2 emissions in Abu Dhabi by over 2.4 million metric tonnes annually.
With the Al Ajban Solar PV project, Abu Dhabi will host three of the world's largest single-site solar power plants, alongside the Al Dhafra Solar PV and Noor Abu Dhabi facilities. These projects are essential to the UAE's energy diversification and decarbonization efforts.
The Ashurst Team was led by Partner Luke Robottom in Abu Dhabi, with support from Partners Natasha Kavanagh and Matthew Wood in the Abu Dhabi and London offices, respectively. This marks Ashurst's second major sustainable project in the UAE this year, following the successful closing of the first waste-to-energy facility in Abu Dhabi in July, in collaboration with Herbert Smith Freehills and Al Tamimi & Company.
The Dentons Team was led by Partners Stephen Knight, Kanishka Singh, Colm O’Huiginn, and Graham Richmond.
