A patent infringement lawsuit has been filed against Samsung Electronics, Samsung Display, and U.S. subsidiary of Samsung Electronics’ with the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas on June 22 by JOLED – an OLED manufacturer based in Japan.
JOLED is a company that has been jointly set up by Sony, Panasonic and other Japanese companies. The lawsuit filed by JOLED alleges that Samsung Electronics and others have used its OLED panel technology without its consent for Galaxy smartphones sold in the United States.
JOLED holds about 4,000 patents related to organic matters. On June 19, JOLED announced mass production of OLED panels for TVs.
Although JOLED had technologies and expertise related to OLEDs it however lacked the funds required to develop large OLEDs. Later, Chinese display company invested around 20 billion yen in JOLED.
JOLED also filed a similar complaint against Samsung Electronics Co. and its German subsidiary with the District Court of Mannheim in Germany.
