Faceless ITAT proposed by Budget 2021
The Faceless Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) has been proposed in the Union Budget 2021 presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The government is obligated to make the taxation process faceless for ease of observance and to reduce discretion, the Finance Minister said. This year, the government has already introduced faceless assessment and appeal. The next level of income tax appeal is the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal, the Finance Minister said. She proposes to make this Tribunal faceless. A National Faceless Income Tax Appellate Tribunal Centre shall be established.
All Tribunal-appellant communication will be electronic. Video-conferencing will be deployed wherever personal hearing is required. It was on 25 January 1941 that India's Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) was set up. The ITAT is the first independent forum in its appellate hierarchy and the second appellate authority under direct taxes. ITAT's orders can be laid open to appellate challenge on considerable questions of law before the respective High Court.
