Ericsson extends legal battle with Apple over 5G patents

With new filings indicating that the patent infringement battle with Apple will also take place in the United Kingdom, Ericsson has extended its legal battle with Apple over 5G patents.

The iPhone and other products were infringed on by Ericsson's 5G patents early in 2022, as Ericsson believed Apple infringed on Ericsson's patents. It is reported that Ericsson has taken the war to the UK as part of the latest developments in the affair.

An application for patents is filed by Ericsson with Taylor Wessing in the High Court of Justice for England and Wales on June 6, as spotted by FOSS Patents. As a result, HP-2022-000013 and HP-2022-000014 are listed as the defendants, and HP-2022-000014 includes Apple Retail UK, Apple Distribution International, and Apple Inc., both of which include Apple Retail UK as a defendant.

Having been assigned to the Patents Court, these two cases are designated as "Part 7" claims concerning patents and registered designs. In the suit, there is no information on which patents apply, but it is estimated that they may be patents that are essential to the standard of operation.

Despite their best efforts in mediation with the Eastern District of Texas, the two sides have filed fresh filings. Possibly, the U.K. suits are retaliatory, as mediation firms typically do not want to appear hostile to one another.
