Hogan Lovells counts Europe most, makes 27 strong partnerships
A 14-promotion count for the European network in 2022 benefits most in front of last year's, 25. There were 27 strong partnerships announced by Hogan Lovells, along 71 new counsel appointments, 14 of which were in Europe, up from 11 in 2021.
Compared to the 25-partner round of 2021, the 2022 round is little increase but below the 29 and 30 partners of the 2020 and 2019 rounds, respectively.
From 60 in 2021, there was a second successive shift increase in counsel appointments. The number of counsel promotion has increased by 66 percent since 2019, when 47 people were appointed.
Across the firm's offices in London, Birmingham, Munich, Paris, Madrid and Brussels, the European promotions are expanded with the UK justifying six of the new partners.
Commenting on the UK promotions, local managing partner, Penny Angell described it as "a key engine of the firm" that would strengthen its commitment to clients in London.
There were fewer US appointments in 2021, resulting in 11 promotions in the firm's Washington DC HQ, New York, Philadelphia and Denver offices, with an additional promotion in Mexico City. Compared to 2021, the firm has made 14 Americas promotions, though lost a high-profile pair of New York litigation team to Herbert Smith Freehills in November.
Hong Kong's first partner appointment since 2019 took place in the firm's branch in that city, while one partner and one counsel were promoted at the firm's Shanghai joint venture, Hogan Lovells Fidelity.
The second year of promotions did not occur in the Middle East or Africa, but the firm did recently hire its first partner-level lateral in South Africa since it reopened in Johannesburg after separating from Routledge Modise in 2019.
A total of 44 percent of the appointees were female, the same as in 2021 year, along with 11percent belonging to racial and ethnic minorities, as compared to 16percent in 2021, 5percent of the appointees declared their LGBTQ+ affiliation, the same as in 2021.
The practice area promotion results reflected transactional consistency. Corporate and finance lawyers received ten promotions (the same as 2021), including six for M&A and capital markets attorneys.
There have been seven promotions in the firm's IP group, while ten promotions have been made for disputes lawyers since 2021, reflecting the post-pandemic disputes climate.
There were five disputes lawyers selected as litigators, two partners each were greeted by investigations and fraud team and employment team as well with a specialist in arbitration was promoted.
In a statement, Miguel Zaldivar, CEO of Hogan Lovells, said the promotions reflected the firm's globally diversified capabilities and reach. It includes its key business sectors with an add-on that he was "particularly pleased to see 48percent of our new partners and new counsel are women, racial and ethnic minorities, or LGBTQ+."
