Delhi High Court Designates 70 Lawyers as Senior Advocates
After a hiatus of nearly three and a half years, the Delhi High Court on Friday designated 70 lawyers as Senior Advocates. The recognition followed an extensive evaluation process conducted by the court's Permanent Committee, which included Chief Justice Manmohan, senior judges Vibhu Bakhru and Yashwant Varma, Additional Solicitor General Chetan Sharma, and senior advocates Sudhir Nandrajog and Mohit Mathur.
Over 300 lawyers applied for the coveted designation, a mark of distinction awarded by the Supreme Court and high courts to acknowledge legal expertise, court craft, and knowledge. The selection process involved weeks of interviews, culminating in a full court meeting where candidates shortlisted by the committee were analysed in detail.
The exercise was conducted under the Delhi High Court Designation of Senior Advocate Rules, 2018. Notably, the court abolished the earlier requirement for a name to be proposed by three Senior Advocates, a rule that had drawn significant criticism.
The last round of such designations occurred in March 2021, when 55 lawyers were conferred the Senior Advocate title.
