James Newell Assumes Role As Chairman And CEO Of Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney
James Newell Assumes Role As Chairman And CEO Of Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney
James Newell has officially assumed the role of Chairman and CEO at Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney, succeeding Joseph Dougherty, who held the position for two terms since his election in 2016.
Expressing his gratitude, Newell stated, “It’s an incredible honor to start my term as the firm’s Chairman and CEO,” said Newell. “I’m excited about where this firm is headed and how we’ll continue to build upon its remarkable legacy.”
He added, “As we navigate a changing legal market, my chief focus is to continue our best-in-class reputation among our clients and within the legal profession. We’ll continue to cultivate a dynamic, inclusive, high-performing firm culture, strategically grow in target markets across our national platform, and reinforce our commitment to innovation to best serve our clients.”
Newell's appointment follows a five-month transition period, during which he was unanimously elected as CEO-elect by the firm’s voting shareholders in January 2024. Prior to assuming his current role, he chaired the Financial Institutions, Bankruptcy, and Real Estate section, specializing in representing secured creditors and financial institutions in bankruptcy matters and corporate reorganizations.
With 36 years of experience at Buchanan, Newell has played a pivotal role in the firm's leadership and growth. He has served on and chaired various committees, including the advisory committee, associates and recruiting committees, and compensation committee.
Newell's tenure as Chairman and CEO will span three years, with the option for re-election to a second term. Meanwhile, Dougherty will transition back to practicing law, focusing on the firm’s longstanding clients. He will also play a key role in recruiting new talent to the firm.
“I’m proud to pass the baton to Jim as he becomes Chairman and CEO of Buchanan,” said Dougherty. “It has been a true privilege to lead the firm for the past eight years and I’m proud of what we have achieved and the positive direction in which we are headed. Jim has a clear vision for the firm’s future and will be very successful in continuing to drive our strategic growth. Jim will be laser-focused on nurturing our strong firm culture and delivering excellent value and service to our clients.”
