Supreme Court sets up fifth Constitution bench
Out of the 29 judges, 25 will be a part of these seats
The Supreme Court has set up the fifth Constitution bench to hear six cases. The new bench comprises Justices KM Joseph, Ajay Rastogi, Aniruddha Bose, Hrishikesh Roy, and CT Ravikumar.
The judges will hear the following matters:
• WhatsApp's privacy policy and its users' right to privacy under Article 21 (Karmanya Singh Sareen vs Union of India);
• A foolproof system for the appointment of members of the Election Commission (Anoop Baranwal vs Union of India);
• Whether the bull-taming sport, Jallikattu can be allowed to be practiced as a cultural right. The plea challenged The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Tamil Nadu Amendment Act, 2017) passed by the State of Tamil Nadu to allow Jallikattu (Animal Welfare Board of India vs Union of India);
• Questions surrounding euthanasia (Common Cause vs Union of India];
• Validity of arbitration agreement embedded in an unstamped contract (Global Mercantile Private Ltd. vs Indo Unique Flame Limited);
• Issues relating to adultery (Joseph Shine vs Union of India).
