Supreme Court Collegium Headed by CJI Deliberates Upon Names of High Court Judges for elevation to Supreme Court
The Supreme Court collegium headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) SA Bobde met on 17 March 2021 to deliberate upon names of High Court Judges for elevation to the Top Court.
Besides the CJI, four other members to the collegium include Justices N V Ramana, R F Nariman, U U Lalit, and A M Khanwilkar. On 18 November 2019, Justice Bobde took oath as the CJI and no recommendation during his tenure has been made so far regarding the appointment of a Judge to the Top Court.
CJI SA Bobde would superannuate on April 23, he presided over the five-member collegium meeting to finalize the list of names that are to be recommended to the Centre Govt. for the appointment of Judges in the Apex Court.
However, the deliberation could not conclude. The collegium considered the names of the Chief Justices of three High Courts and two women High Court Judges and added that the next meeting might take place in April.
The Supreme Court has a sanctioned strength of 34 Judges and after the retirement of Justice Indu Malhotra recently, the vacancies have gone up to five.
