Government clears appointment of Manjusha Ajay Deshpande as Bombay High Court Additional Judge
Government clears appointment of Manjusha Ajay Deshpande as Bombay High Court Additional Judge
The Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Meghwal apprised about it via Twitter
The Central Government has given the nod for appointing Advocate Manjusha Ajay Deshpande as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court. She will hold the office for two years.
On 18 July 2023, the Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud had recommended her appointment. It was noted that Deshpande was a competent lawyer, well-versed in several branches of law, particularly, constitutional and service matters.
Her elevation would add to the representation of women in the high Court bench, especially amongst the women lawyers practicing before the Aurangabad bench.
The recommendation was made by the Bombay High Court Collegium on 26 September 2022, as per the Supreme Court Collegium resolution.
However, on 2 May 2023, the Collegium deferred its decision and sought a report from then acting chief justice of the Bombay High Court. This was due to certain issues flagged by the law ministry.
After discussing the matter with his colleagues at the Aurangabad bench, on 10 May 2022, the acting chief justice submitted his report.
Thereafter, the Collegium considered the government's inputs in conjunction with the report. Subsequently, her name was cleared for the appointment.
