Nilanjan Sinha is the General Counsel at ICICI Bank. He has over 25 years of experience as a corporate lawyer in manufacturing companies and financial services. He started his in-house career with Exide Industries, a battery manufacturing company. Later, he worked in the Corporate Legal Team of the ICICI Bank, followed by a stint as President and General Counsel, YES Bank before joining GE Capital India in 2010 to head Legal, Compliance and Government relations.
He spent a year at Godrej and Boyce Manufacturing Company Limited as Head, Corporate Advisory before returning to home ground, ICICI Bank, to head its legal functions, with a team of over 250 lawyers. Having earned his Bachelor’s degrees in Commerce as well as Law, Nilanjan studied to become a Fellow Member of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India. In 2006, he took his Masters’ Degree in Commercial Laws with specialisations in comparative corporate governance, banking, intellectual property and international disputes.
Nilanjan was featured in the Legal 500 GC Powerlist: India (2016 and 2018) and won the India Business Law Journal Award for being the best General Counsel for Banking(2021). He is a member of the Legal and Operations Committee of the Indian Banks Association, and a member of the Board of Studies of NMIMS Business School for MBA Law.
Under his leadership, the ICICI Bank’s legal team has won many accolades, including the Best Banking and Financial Services In-House Team of the Year at the ALB India Law Awards (2021). ICICI Bank won Legal Era Awards’ the Best Legal Team in Banking & Finance. India In-house Team of the Year, Banking and Financial Services In-House Team of the Year, Innovative In-House Team of the Year at Asian Legal Business India Law Awards, 2022.
