Delvin Jacob Mathews is the Director, Legal and Compliance at Boehringer Ingelheim (BI) India. He is an asset to the BI Group, one of the world’s 20 leading pharmaceutical companies and one of the fastest-growing and ranking 8th among the multinationals in India. Along with advising on strategic business alliances (legal & commercial), he also counsels on legal environment and responsibilities, including planning, assessing and decision-making.

Having 20 years of professional experience in diverse areas of legal practice, including pharma, oil and gas and retail and manufacturing, he is one of the few General Counsels who is on the Board of Directors of the Company. He is credited for setting up and operationalising legal departments in several establishments and factories and is apt at driving contracts execution, implementation, enforcement and management. He is also trained to conduct internal inquiries and compliance proceedings.

Holding BSc, LLB and MBA degrees, Delvin has always responded well to key statutory and policy changes at the Centre and the states and also the territories of Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh, as regards conducting business.

Under his management, BI India’s Legal team has been recognised with the 10th CCA International Award for various efforts initiated in 2018. It also won the award of Excellence in Corporate Law, Society of Indian Law Firms. The team received three awards in the Future of Legal Summit and Awards, 2019 held in Mumbai. The categories were - Legal Team of the Year, Most Innovative Legal Team of the Year, and General Counsel of the Year.

What you are doing today will be judged by the standards of tomorrow

Delvin and I worked in a German company for 3+ years together. It was challenging to work with a colleague who emanated a quiet disposition and yet showed spirited teamwork when it mattered. We were involved in joint projects, he was a very good negotiator and a teamworker who led from the front and inspired others with fact and skill-based arguments. Besides that his strategic mind and the ability to involve himself in any area of business was a source of constant inspiration for me. His dedication and will to go the road, however difficult, made him one of not too many around me. Wish him all success for his future career
