Amarjit Singh Chandhiok is currently President-Elect of the Bar Association of India, which cumulatively represents as a voluntary body for almost the entire legal profession in India and is also the oldest one. Mr. Chandhiok is a SIMI (Singapore International Mediation Institute) accredited international mediator and mediation trainer.
He is the current President of Maadhyam – International Council for Conflict Resolution, and INSOL India. Maadhyam is a professional institution and an inter-disciplinary national body meant to develop and popularize arbitration and mediation as appropriate choices for resolution of conflicts. INSOL India plays a prominent role in developing the discipline of insolvency, turnaround and restructuring professionals with a view to restoring the economic value of underperforming businesses and developing a world-class insolvency regime in India.
Mr. Chandhiok is a member of the London Court of International Arbitration as well as the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC). He was part of many an international and domestic arbitration, both as counsel as well as member of arbitral tribunals/sole arbitrator.
Mr. Chandhiok has been conferred several prestigious awards including the “Leader in the Profession – Leader of the Bar Award – 2007” by the Bar Council of Delhi (the only time it was awarded); “Outstanding Jurist – 2000,” by J.N. Kaushal Jurisprudence Centre, New Delhi; Award for Rendering Meritorious Legal Services by Delhi Citizens’ Forum for Civil Rights in 2002; “National Law Day Award – 2006” from the then Prime Minister of India for the contribution made in the practice of Civil Law and “Sikh of the Year 2010” by Sikh Forum International, London, UK. He was awarded the Legal Excellence Award 2020-21 for outstanding contribution and excellence in the field of Mediation by Legal Era, in June 2021.
His name appeared in the Forbes Legal Powerlist 2021.
He has also been awarded two doctorates (honoris causa) - one by World Sikh University, London and the other by Amity University, Uttar Pradesh, India.
Amarjit Singh Chandhiok is a distinguished Senior Advocate practicing in the Supreme Court, various High Courts and Tribunals in India etc. A former Additional Solicitor General of India, Mr. Chandhiok was also the Principal Counsel, European Union Commission, the only Indian lawyer who held that position. He has also served six terms as the President of Delhi High Court Bar Association, which is a record.
