Sony settles consumer lawsuit over PlayStation game sales in US District Court

Sony
is settling a class-action lawsuit in the US District Court of San Francisco by paying $7.85 million. It was accused of overcharging customers for digital PlayStation games.

The lawsuit stemmed from Sony's 2019 decision to restrict retailers from selling game-specific vouchers, allegedly reducing competition. Over 4.4 million customers who made eligible purchases from April 2019 to December 2023, will receive electronic credits, as the entertainment giant agreed to distribute $7.85 million to end the matter.

The plaintiffs sued Sony after it barred retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy and GameStop from offering game-specific vouchers. They accused the company of illegally reducing competition for digital PlayStation games.

Though denying any wrongdoing, Sony has now mentioned settling the dispute to avoid further expenses and distraction from continued litigation.

Class members with deactivated PlayStation accounts who cannot receive credits will be compensated by another method. The lawyers for the plaintiffs said they invested about 13,700 hours in the litigation, which began in 2021. They intended to request the court to award them 33 percent of the settlement for legal fees, or $2.61 million.
