Meta To Appeal CCI Order Curbing Data-Sharing Between WhatsApp And Other Apps
The competition watchdog placed the restrictions for five years
Meta Platforms has stated that it would appeal the order of the Competition Commission of India (CCI) that restricts the US tech firm from sharing data for advertising between WhatsApp and its other applications and imposed a $25.4 million fine.
In 2021, the CCI began investigating WhatsApp's privacy policy that allowed data sharing between Meta and its units, sparking global criticism.
The CCI stated, "Sharing user data collected on WhatsApp with other Meta companies for purposes other than providing service shall not be made a condition for users to access the service in India.”
A spokesperson for Meta said that the 2021 update did not change the privacy of people's messages. He added, "We ensured no one would have their accounts deleted or lose functionality of the WhatsApp service because of the update.”
