Copyright Infringement: Pidilite Secures Injunction From Bombay High Court Against Rang Rasayan Over "Rangeela" Packaging

In a copyright infringement case, Pidilite Industries Limited, makers of the popular "Rangeela" brand of Holi colours, received a favourable order from the Bombay High Court. The Court intervened after Pidilite filed a suit against Rang Rasayan Pvt Ltd for allegedly using packaging that closely resembled their "Rangeela" brand.

Following a hearing presided over by Justice Bharati Dangre, Rang Rasayan Pvt Ltd agreed not to manufacture, sell, or distribute any products with packaging similar to Pidilite's "Rangeela" coloured powders. This restriction applies to both online and offline channels, including e-commerce platforms like Amazon and Flipkart.

Justice Dangre further ordered Rang Rasayan to submit detailed information on their stock of infringing products manufactured and sold within the past year, within a two-week timeframe.

The Court acknowledged the Holi festival which was celebrated across the country on Sunday-Monday and its impact on sales of these products.

The Bombay High Court has scheduled the next hearing for this case on April 25, 2024. During this hearing, the Court will likely consider the details submitted by Rang Rasayan and potentially determine any damages to be awarded to Pidilite for the alleged copyright infringement.

Advocate Yatin Kochare, representing Rang Rasayan Pvt Ltd, told the court they had agreed to the commitments, especially given the limited window for Holi sales.
