Thomas Tarala joins Baker McKenzie in Hong Kong
Having hired ex-HNA Group general counsel Thomas Tarala as a partner, Baker McKenzie has added a second partner to its Hong Kong team within weeks
In addition to joining Baker McKenzie, Tarala joins the firm only weeks after Joy Lam, the former partner of Sidley Austin in Hong Kong, joined the firm as a partner. Bakers also signed him as the first hire into the capital markets practice of the firm in Hong Kong since it hired Victoria Lloyd from Ropes & Gray in July 2021.
Tarala worked at Hogan Lovells, where he was the firm's head of its U.S. securities practice before joining HNA. In 25 years spanning career, Tarala has provided advice to intermediaries, banks and corporations in Hong Kong, China, Southeast Asia, Europe, and the United States.
Among the topics he has focused on both equity capital market transactions as well as debt capital markets transactions, M&A, fund formation, loans, corporate restructurings, litigation and regulatory issues.
After years of unsuccessful attempts to restructure its debt, the Hainan-based HNA Group, once one of China's most aggressive conglomerates with an annual revenue line up to $50 billion, declared bankruptcy in 2021 following a deal to consolidate some debt.
