Anthropic Settles Matter In US District Court With Universal Music On AI ‘guardrails’

Resolves part of a lawsuit the publishers filed last year

Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has reached an agreement in the US District Court for the Northern District of California with Universal Music and other music publishers. This is over its use of ‘guardrails’ to keep the chatbot Claude from generating copyrighted song lyrics.

Approved by District Judge Eumi Lee, it is part of an ongoing case in the federal court accusing Amazon-backed Anthropic of misusing hundreds of song lyrics from Beyonce, the Rolling Stones and other artists.

The publishers had demanded safeguards against reproducing their lyrics as part of a broader request for the court to block Anthropic's alleged copyright infringement.

However, Anthropic denied the allegations stating it already had the guardrails in place.

Meanwhile, Judge Lee is considering the publishers' request for a preliminary injunction to halt Anthropic's use of their lyrics in AI training.

Anthropic has agreed to maintain its existing guardrails and apply them to future Claude models and allow the court to resolve disputes.

A spokesperson for Anthropic stated "Claude isn't designed to be used for copyright infringement, and we have numerous processes in place to prevent such infringement. Our decision to enter this stipulation is consistent with those priorities."

On the other hand, the publishers remarked, "While Anthropic's stipulation is a positive step forward, this lawsuit remains ongoing.”
