Supreme Court Collegium Proposes Permanent Appointment of Three Additional Judges of Calcutta High Court

The Collegium of the Supreme Court of India led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Sanjiv Khanna, has recently recommended the names of three additional judges of the Calcutta High Court for appointment as permanent judges.

The Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court had made this recommendation in consultation with his colleagues, and the Chief Minister and Governor of West Bengal have also agreed with the recommendation.

In their resolution, the Collegium recommended the names of Justices Krishna Rao, Bibhas Ranjan De, and Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee for appointment as permanent judges of the Calcutta High Court, and resolved:

On 14 March 2023, the Chief Justice of the High Court at Calcutta made the recommendation in consultation with his two senior-most colleagues. The Chief Minister and the Governor of the State of West Bengal have conveyed their agreement with the recommendation.”

In terms of the Memorandum of Procedure judges of the Supreme Court who are conversant with the functioning of the High Court at Calcutta were consulted to ascertain the suitability of the above additional judges for being appointed as permanent judges.

The Committee of two Judges of the Supreme Court constituted by the Chief Justice of India in terms of the Resolution dated 26 October 2017 of the Supreme Court Collegium had assessed the judgments of the Additional Judges.

The suitability of the additional judges has been assessed by a committee of judges from the Supreme Court, and after considering all aspects, the Collegium has resolved to recommend their appointment as permanent judges.

The three judges were initially appointed as additional judges in November 2021.
