Madras High Court Seeks Response from Tamil Nadu Cricket Association on Plea Alleging Exorbitant Pricing at Chepauk Stadium

The Madras High Court by its division bench of Acting Chief Justice T Raja and Justice Bharatha Chakravarthy has sought response from Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA), while adjudicating a plea which alleged that the authorities of the MA Chidambaram Stadium, popularly known as the Chepauk Stadium, charged exuberant prices from people during the India-Australia One Day International Match on 22 March.

The bench was hearing the plea moved by an advocate AS Shanmuga Rajan. Rajan has claimed that when he went to watch the India-Australia ODI match on 22 March, he was disappointed with the various management issues.

He condemned the unsatisfactory services offered by the management by citing that, there were no basic amenities, like clean drinking water, clean toilets, etc inside the stadium. Further, it was submitted that water food and snacks were sold at exorbitant prices. Listing out the details, Rajan submitted that even a Rs. 20 water bottle was sold at Rs.100 resulting in huge swindling of public money.

The advocate further argued that the association was in clear violation of the Legal Metrology Act of 2009 and the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules.

In addition to these, he pertinently mentioned that the stadium is set to host several crucial matches in the Indian Premier League, 2023, and the ICC World Cup, 2O23 and urged the Court that it must act expeditiously and direct the management to ensure that the hard earned public money is not swindled.

The bench has ordered TNCA to file their responses within two weeks.
