Justice Devendra Upadhyay Takes Oath as Chief Justice of Bombay High Court

Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court at Raj Bhavan Mumbai.

Maharashtra Governor Ramesh Bais administered the oath of office to Justice Upadhyaya at a brief swearing-in ceremony. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis attended the swearing-in ceremony.

Previously, Justice Upadhyay was the sitting judge of the Allahabad High Court before his elevation as Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.

The position of Bombay High Court Chief Justice fell vacant after Chief Justice RD Dhanuka retired on 30 May. Subsequently, Justice Nitin Jamdar was appointed as the Acting Chief Justice.

On 6 July, the Supreme Court Collegium comprising of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, and Sanjiv Khanna recommended the appointment of Justice Devendra Upadhyaya of the Allahabad High Court as Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.

The collegium noted that Chief Justice Upadhyaya had acquired eleven years of experience in dispensing justice, and his appointment would provide representation of the Allahabad High Court among the Chief Justices.

Born on 16 June 1965, Upadhyay graduated in law from Lucknow University in 1991. Justice Upadhyaya practiced civil and constitutional sides at Allahabad High Court, Lucknow Bench. He was promoted as Additional Judge on 21 November 2011 and appointed as Permanent Judge on 6 August 2013.
