Deepinder Singh Patwalia, a senior advocate of Punjab & Haryana High Court, has been appointed the Advocate General (AG) of Punjab. The appointment was made after former Advocate General APS Deol resigned from the post.
Anurag Verma, Principal Secretary to the Government of Punjab, issued a notification to that effect.
Patwalia is the son of retired Supreme Court judge, Justice Kuldip Singh and brother of Supreme Court senior lawyer, Paramjit Singh Patwalia.
Deol was appointed AG of Punjab in September after Atul Nanda resigned with the exit of Captain Amarinder Singh as chief minister of Punjab. Days after the appointment, Deol tendered his resignation after Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu objected to his appointment.
Sidhu had alleged that Deol was a defence lawyer for former Director General of Police Sumedh Singh Saini and Paramraj Singh Umaranangal, both accused in the Behbal Kalan police firing case.
Even as chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi did not accept Deol's resignation, the latter released a press statement.
The statement read, "Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu is obstructing the functioning of the Punjab government and there is a concerted effort by vested interests to malign the image of the Congress party in view of the upcoming elections in the state."
The chief minister eventually accepted Deol's resignation.
