The Central government has notified the appointment of Justice TS Sivagnanam as the acting Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court.

Incidentally, in February, the Supreme Court Collegium had recommended Justice Sivagnanam’s appointment as the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, and not acting chief justice.

The Collegium had noted that Madras High Court, the parent high court of Justice Sivagnanam, had only Justice S Manikumar of the Kerala High Court as Chief Justice.

It held that the consultee judges had okayed the Collegium's proposal to recommend Justice Sivagnanam's name.

The resolution further stated, "Apart from this, the period which has been served by Justice T S Sivagnanam as a judge of the Calcutta High Court would provide useful experience in his work as the chief justice of that high court."

Justice Sivagnanam completed his B.Sc. at Loyola College, Chennai, and his B.L. from Madras Law College.

In 1986, he enrolled in the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and in 2009, was appointed as an additional judge of the Madras High Court. Two years later, he was made a permanent judge. A decade later, in 2021, he was transferred and sworn in as judge of the Calcutta High Court.
